Intentional abuse, neglect, and exploitation among caregivers to frail and isolated elderly create serious risks across diverse formal and informal care settings. This field has expanded continuously since the early 1970s. Accurate prevalence and incidence rates have not been determined. This book provides a global comprehensive and systematic state-of-the review of this field that fills the gaps between research, practice, and policy. The book addresses the epidemiology of the issue and the global prevalence of elder abuse in both developed and developing countries, which synthesizes the most up-to-date data about risk factors and protective factors associated with elder Whether at home or in a nursing facility, the cause of elder abuse often stems from a caretaker’s inability to handle their duties. Therefore, a key part of elder abuse prevention involves carefully choosing and supporting caregivers. Elder abuse prevention also involves keeping elders in the best physical, mental, and social health possible. Elder abuse is a global public health and human rights problem. Evidence suggests that elder abuse is prevalent, predictable, costly, and sometimes fatal. This review will highlight the global epidemiology of elder abuse in terms of its prevalence, risk factors, and consequences in community populations. Some abuse is the willful act of cruelty inflicted a single individual upon an older person. In fact, a case study in Canada suggests that the high elder abuse statistics are from repeat offenders who, like in other forms of abuse, practice elder abuse for the schadenfreude associated with the act. The term elder includes persons who are at least 50 years of age and above, depending on which state law is being applied. Elder abuse is a serious public health problem affecting millions of older Americans each year. 4 As the aging population continues to increase, the number of affected persons is also likely to increase.
